Common Types of Back Injuries
The most common types of back injuries can be divided into these categories:
- Strains and sprains (soft tissue injuries). Strains are stretched or torn tendons or muscles, and sprains are stretched or torn ligaments. These injuries can occur as a result of repetitive motion, improper or heavy lifting, or an awkward movement, such as twisting too quickly.
- Fractured vertebrae injuries. A fractured vertebra in the back is a very serious injury type and is only possible when a large amount of force is exerted on the spine. For example, a worker may suffer a fractured vertebrae injury if they suffered a fall from a height, are involved in a motor vehicle accident, or are hit with a large piece of machinery. One of the biggest risks of a fractured vertebrae injury is harm to the spinal cord, which could result in permanent paralysis.
- Herniated disk injuries. The spine is comprised of a number of disks that sit between the vertebrae. The disks are filled with a jelly-like substance and help to cushion the vertebrae and absorb shock. If the disk ruptures and the jelly-like substance leaks, the surrounding nerves are aggravated – this is called a herniated disk injury. This type of injury can be the result of repetitive motion or a sudden injury.
- Aggravation of a prexisting back problem.
