Common Types of Back Injuries

The most common types of back injuries can be divided into these categories:

  • Strains and sprains (soft tissue injuries). Strains are stretched or torn tendons or muscles, and sprains are stretched or torn ligaments. These injuries can occur as a result of repetitive motion, improper or heavy lifting, or an awkward movement, such as twisting too quickly.
  • Fractured vertebrae injuries. A fractured vertebra in the back is a very serious injury type and is only possible when a large amount of force is exerted on the spine. For example, a worker may suffer a fractured vertebrae injury if they suffered a fall from a height, are involved in a motor vehicle accident, or are hit with a large piece of machinery. One of the biggest risks of a fractured vertebrae injury is harm to the spinal cord, which could result in permanent paralysis.
  • Herniated disk injuries. The spine is comprised of a number of disks that sit between the vertebrae. The disks are filled with a jelly-like substance and help to cushion the vertebrae and absorb shock. If the disk ruptures and the jelly-like substance leaks, the surrounding nerves are aggravated – this is called a herniated disk injury. This type of injury can be the result of repetitive motion or a sudden injury.
  • Aggravation of a prexisting back problem.

Workers’ Compensation for a Back Injury in Pennsylvania

Workers’ compensation insurance covers the vast majority of employees in Pennsylvania and is designed to pay for medical benefits and lost wages when a worker is injured while performing a work-related task. In order to recover compensation, a worker must prove that the injury occurred at a work-related function, was caused by a specific work activity, happened suddenly at a specific time or happened from repetitive activity. You have the right to receive compensation for all necessary and reasonable medical expenses related to the injury. Lost wage replacement benefits are available, too.
